How many squares of shingles for a 2,000 sq ft roof?

2,000 sq ft of roof surface is 20 squares. With 10% waste, buy 22 squares: 66 bundles of 3-bundle-per-square shingles, $2,508.00 at $38.00 a bundle. If 2,000 sq ft is the footprint under the roof, such as a 50 × 40 ft gable including overhangs, a 6/12 pitch turns it into 2,236 sq ft of roof, 22.36 squares and 74 bundles. Shingles, underlayment, ridge cap and drip edge for that roof come to about $3,388.00.

How the numbers work

  1. Roof surface: 2,000 sq ft ÷ 100 = 20 squares. × 1.1 waste × 3 bundles per square = 66 bundles.
  2. Footprint instead: pitch factor at 6/12 = √(1 + (6 ÷ 12)²) = 1.118.
  3. Roof area: 50 × 40 × 1.118 = 2,236 sq ft, or 22.36 squares.
  4. Bundles: 22.36 × 1.1 × 3, rounded up = 74.
  5. Underlayment: 2,236 × 1.1 for laps ÷ 1,000 sq ft rolls, rounded up = 3 rolls.
  6. Ridge cap: 50 ft of ridge ÷ 30 ft per bundle = 2 bundles. Drip edge: 189.44 ft of eaves and rakes = 19 pieces of 10 ft.
  7. Cost: 74 × $38.00 + 3 × $95.00 + 2 × $60.00 + 19 × $9.00 = $3,388.00.

What changes the cost

Pitch and roof shape
Steeper roofs have more surface over the same footprint: this one runs from 21.08 squares at 4/12 to 28.28 at 12/12. Hip roofs, valleys and dormers mean more cutting; use about 15% waste instead of 10%.
Shingle grade
Shingles are 83% of this list at $38.00 a bundle for architectural shingles. 3-tab shingles cost less; designer and impact-rated lines cost more, and some heavy shingles come 4 or 5 bundles to the square.
What is not counted
Starter strip, nails, ice and water shield at eaves and valleys, vents, step and chimney flashing, replacement decking, and tear-off and disposal of the old roof.
Labor versus DIY
These are register prices for doing the work yourself. A contractor's bid adds labor, equipment, overhead, permit fees where they apply, and markup on materials, so it will run well above this figure. Get two or three written bids against the same plan and compare the material lists line by line. Most homeowners hire out a full reroof: it is steep, hot work on a weather deadline, and shingle warranties can depend on how the roof was installed.

Questions

How many bundles of shingles for a 2,000 sq ft roof?

66 bundles: 20 squares plus 10% waste, at 3 bundles per square. Hip roofs and cut-up roofs need more.

Is a 2,000 sq ft house a 2,000 sq ft roof?

No. Living area counts every floor and leaves out overhangs, while roof area depends on the footprint, the overhangs and the pitch. Measure the roof footprint including overhangs and apply the pitch factor.

What is a roofing square?

One square is 100 sq ft of roof surface. Divide the roof area by 100 to get squares.
