How many rolls of wallpaper for a 12x12 room?

9 double rolls for a 12 × 12 room with 8 ft walls and one door, using standard 20.5 in × 33 ft rolls with no pattern repeat. That is 27 strips at 3 strips per roll. With 9 ft walls and a 21 in repeat it jumps to 14 rolls. Paper and tools at $60.00 a roll: $560.00.

How the numbers work

  1. Wall run: 2 × (12 + 12) = 48 ft, less 3 ft for the door = 45 ft.
  2. Strips: 45 × 12 ÷ 20.5 in = 26.34, rounded up to 27.
  3. Strip length: 96 in of wall + 0 in repeat + 4 in trim = 100 in.
  4. Strips per roll: 396 in ÷ 100 in, rounded down = 3.
  5. Rolls: 27 ÷ 3, rounded up = 9.
  6. Cost: 9 × $60.00 + 1 × $20.00 = $560.00.

What changes the cost

Pattern repeat
Each strip has to start at the same point in the pattern, so the repeat is added to every strip. A long repeat on tall walls can cost a whole strip per roll.
Roll size
US double rolls are usually 20.5 in × 33 ft. Many papers are priced per single roll but sold only in double rolls, and European and designer rolls differ. Use the dimensions on the label.
Paper grade
Wallpaper prices range widely by maker and material. The $60.00 default is a ballpark for a prepasted double roll; enter the price of the paper you choose.
Waste and spare roll
Trim and pattern matching are the waste on wallpaper, and the strip method already counts them. Order every roll from the same batch number, plus one spare for repairs; a roll from a later run may not match.
Labor versus DIY
These are register prices for doing the work yourself. A contractor's bid adds labor, equipment, overhead, permit fees where they apply, and markup on materials, so it will run well above this figure. Get two or three written bids against the same plan and compare the material lists line by line. Wall prep, such as stripping old paper, skim-coating and priming, is extra and not counted.
Regional prices
Default prices are ballpark U.S. home-center figures. Expect them to differ by region, season, brand and grade. Enter your store's prices in the calculator and every quantity on this page reprices.

Questions

How much wallpaper for a 12x12 room with 9 ft ceilings?

9 double rolls with no pattern repeat. A 21 in repeat cuts each roll to 2 strips and raises the count to 14.

Do I subtract windows when ordering wallpaper?

Usually not. You still need full strips above and below, and the offcuts rarely fit elsewhere. Subtract doors and wide openings that run close to full height.

How many square feet does a double roll cover?

A 20.5 in × 33 ft double roll is about 56 sq ft, but count strips, not square feet. Trim and pattern matching use part of every roll.
