How the numbers work
- Area: 20 × 10 = 200 sq ft.
- Volume: 200 × 3 in ÷ 12 = 50 cu ft, or 1.85 cu yd.
- Bags: 50 ÷ 2 cu ft per bag, rounded up = 25.
- Bulk: 1.85 cu yd rounded up to the next 0.5 yd = 2 cu yd.
- Bags: 25 × $4.50 = $112.50. Bulk: 2 × $40.00 + 1 × $75.00 = $155.00.

What changes the cost
- Depth
- 2 to 3 in suits most beds. Deeper than 4 in can starve roots of air. Topping up an existing bed takes less than a fresh one; measure what is left before you buy.
- Waste and settling
- The calculator adds nothing for waste by default. Fresh mulch settles and some ends up on the lawn; add 5 to 10% under Assumptions for a margin. At 10% this bed takes 28 bags.
- Bag size
- Most bagged mulch is 2 cu ft. Some brands sell 1.5 or 3 cu ft bags; enter the size on the bag or the count will be off.
- Bags or bulk
- Bulk usually wins above two or three cubic yards, even with the $75.00 delivery charge. At the default prices, a 25 × 20 ft bed at 3 in is $283.50 in bags and $275.00 in bulk. Bags make sense for small beds and spots a wheelbarrow cannot reach.
- Mulch type
- The $4.50 default is a basic bagged hardwood mulch. Dyed mulch, pine bark, cedar and pine straw are priced differently; enter what your store charges.
- Labor versus DIY
- Spreading mulch is ordinary DIY work. 1.85 cu yd is a few hours with a wheelbarrow and a fork. A landscaper's price adds labor, edging and bed prep.
- Regional prices
- Default prices are ballpark U.S. home-center figures. Expect them to differ by region, season, brand and grade. Enter your store's prices in the calculator and every quantity on this page reprices.
