How much gravel for a 50-foot driveway?

A 12 × 50 ft driveway at 4 in deep takes 7.41 cu yd of gravel, about 10.37 tons at 1.4 tons per yard. In bulk that is 7.5 cu yd, $487.50 delivered at ballpark prices. In 0.5 cu ft bags it would be 400 bags and $2,400.00, which is why driveways are bought in bulk.

  • Bulk usually wins on price above two or three cubic yards; bags are easier for small beds and tight access.
  • Measure irregular beds as several rectangles, or use average length × average width.

How the numbers work

  1. Area: 50 × 12 = 600 sq ft.
  2. Volume: 600 × 4 in ÷ 12 = 200 cu ft ÷ 27 = 7.41 cu yd.
  3. Weight: 7.41 × 1.4 tons per cu yd = 10.37 tons.
  4. Bulk order: 7.41 rounded up to the next 0.5 yd = 7.5 cu yd.
  5. Cost: 7.5 × $55.00 + 1 × $75.00 = $487.50.

What changes the cost

Depth and layers
A new gravel driveway is usually built in layers: 4 to 6 in of larger base stone, then 2 to 3 in of surface gravel, more on soft soil. Run the calculator once for each layer and price each stone separately.
Stone type and weight
Most yards sell by the ton. 1.4 tons per yard is a rule of thumb for crushed stone; ask your supplier for the figure for their material, since moisture and stone size change it.
Compaction and waste
Loose gravel packs down under traffic and some is lost into soft ground. The calculator adds nothing by default; add 10 to 15% under Assumptions for a compacted driveway. At 15% this one is 8.52 cu yd, a 9 yd order.
Delivery trips
One delivery fee ($75.00 here) assumes one truck. Ask how many tons the truck carries; a second trip is a second fee.
Ground prep
Not counted: stripping sod and topsoil, grading for drainage, geotextile fabric under the stone, and edging. Fabric keeps base stone from sinking into soft clay.
Labor versus DIY
These are register prices for doing the work yourself. A contractor's bid adds labor, equipment, overhead, permit fees where they apply, and markup on materials, so it will run well above this figure. Get two or three written bids against the same plan and compare the material lists line by line. Spreading 10.37 tons by hand is heavy work; a rented tractor or skid steer and a plate compactor make it a short job.
Regional prices
Default prices are ballpark U.S. home-center figures. Expect them to differ by region, season, brand and grade. Enter your store's prices in the calculator and every quantity on this page reprices. Stone prices climb with distance from the quarry.
