How the numbers work

  1. Area: 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft.
  2. Pavers: 144 × 144 ÷ (8 × 4) = 648; with 5% waste, 681.
  3. Base: 144 sq ft × 4 in ÷ 12 × 1.15 for compaction ÷ 27 = 2.04 cu yd; order 2.5 cu yd.
  4. Sand: 144 × 1 in ÷ 12 = 12 cu ft ÷ 0.5 cu ft bags = 24 bags.
  5. Cost: 681 × $0.75 + 2.5 × $55.00 + 24 × $6.00 = $792.25.

What changes the cost

Paver choice
Pavers are 64% of this list at $0.75 for a plain 4 × 8 in concrete paver. Large-format, tumbled and natural stone pavers cost more per square foot. Enter the price per piece, or the pallet price divided by the count.
Base depth and soil
4 in of compacted crushed stone suits a patio on firm soil. Clay, wet ground and driveways need more. A 6 in base under this patio is 3.5 cu yd instead of 2.5.
Waste factor
5% covers cuts on a square patio with straight edges. Curves, borders and herringbone patterns take 10% or more.
What is not counted
Edge restraint and spikes, landscape fabric, polymeric joint sand, plate compactor and saw rental, and hauling away excavated soil.
Labor versus DIY
These are register prices for doing the work yourself. A contractor's bid adds labor, equipment, overhead, permit fees where they apply, and markup on materials, so it will run well above this figure. Get two or three written bids against the same plan and compare the material lists line by line. Excavation is most of the work: dig to base depth plus sand depth plus paver thickness below finished grade, and compact the base in 2 in lifts.
Regional prices
Default prices are ballpark U.S. home-center figures. Expect them to differ by region, season, brand and grade. Enter your store's prices in the calculator and every quantity on this page reprices. Crushed stone is priced locally by the yard or ton.
