How the numbers work

  1. Sections: 100 ft ÷ 8 ft post spacing, rounded up = 13.
  2. Posts: 13 sections + 1 = 14. Set 24 in deep, a 6 ft fence needs posts at least 8 ft long.
  3. Rails: 13 sections × 3 rails = 39.
  4. Pickets: 1200 in ÷ 5.5 in = 218.18 with no gap; with 5% waste, 230.
  5. Concrete: each 10 × 24 in hole less the post is 0.92 cu ft. 14 holes = 12.89 cu ft ÷ 0.6 = 22 bags of 80 lb mix.
  6. Cost: 14 × $16.00 + 39 × $6.00 + 230 × $3.50 + 22 × $6.50 = $1,406.00.

What changes the cost

Picket and post grade
Pickets are 57% of this list. The $3.50 default is a pressure-treated dog-ear picket. Cedar pickets, thicker boards and board-on-board layouts cost more or use more pickets; enter your price and layout in the calculator.
Gates and corners
Add one post for each extra corner or end, and two heavier posts for each gate. Gate frames, hinges and latches are not counted here.
Post spacing
Posts every 8 ft is standard for 8 ft rails. Closer spacing stiffens a fence in high wind and adds posts, rails and concrete.
Waste factor
5% on pickets covers splits, warped boards and the cut at the end of each run. Posts and rails are counted exactly; buy one or two spares.
Labor versus DIY
These are register prices for doing the work yourself. A contractor's bid adds labor, equipment, overhead, permit fees where they apply, and markup on materials, so it will run well above this figure. Get two or three written bids against the same plan and compare the material lists line by line. Digging 14 holes by hand is a long day; a rented power auger shortens it. Call 811 to have buried utilities marked before you dig.
Regional prices
Default prices are ballpark U.S. home-center figures. Expect them to differ by region, season, brand and grade. Enter your store's prices in the calculator and every quantity on this page reprices.
